Texas Jim Lewis appeared in numerous films and scored one national hit ("Too Late to Worry, Too Blue to Cry" in 1944), but isn't often counted among the top rank of Western swing bandleaders. His band featured high-profile players such as Spade Cooley and Merle Travis at various times, but Lewis was partial to novelty music and he switched gears too often to establish an identifiable sound. This 31-track import collects Standard transcriptions recorded with various lineups throughout the '40s, which veer from Texas dancehall swing to Sons of the Pioneers-style group vocal pieces that borrow from the Sons' repertoire. The novelty tracks incorporate Lewis' Hezzie Triesch-inspired washboard and horn getup, but the resulting music isn't nearly as wacky as that of the Hoosier Hot Shots. A few fiddle breakdowns and instrumental curiosities, such as the birdcalls-on-a-violin trick on "Listen to the Mocking Bird," add to the variety. Texas Jim Lewis comes across as a musical jack of all trades on this eclectic set, which should appeal to more than just Western swing collectors.
