Cooder Graw - Discography

Image

Cooder Graw was a self-described "loud country" (country music / alternative country) band from Amarillo and Lubbock, Texas. It is also the title of their second album.
The group formed in 1998. It is perhaps most well known for the song "Llano Estacado" that was featured on a series of Dodge commercials.
Cooder Graw is somewhat of an anomaly in the music industry, in that its members' ages at its inception ranged from late-30s to early-50s. The band's singer, Matt Martindale, was the assistant district attorney of Gray County, Texas prior to devoting his full attention to the band. Guitarist Kelly Turner was the manager of a manufacturing plant in Slaton, Texas.
The band was originally called "Coup de Grâce," but another band was already using that name, so the name was changed to a "Texas-version" of the original name. The band's debut album, Home at the Golden Light, consisted of mostly covers and was self-produced by the band (though executive producer credit is given to Matthew McConaughey, a fraternity brother of Matt Martindale). It was released in 1998. The band's first national release, Cooder Graw was released in late 1999.
Cooder Graw has toured extensively throughout Texas and the United States, both headlining and opening for artists such as Willie Nelson and Alabama. The group also played at the premiere of the film EDtv, which starred McConaughey.
In 2006, Cooder Graw announced that they would cease performing together after the end of the year. Their last show was on December 31, 2006, in Fort Worth, Texas. Lead singer Matt Martindale is still performing occasionally with his new band, The Matt Martindale Band.

Cooder Graw - Cooder Graw 1999

Image

Put this CD in the slot, and turn it up! The second song Llano Estacado is Loud and gritty country, meant to be heard with the volume turned to the what! I can't hear you dial. Matt Martindale, lead singer/song writer, does a great job of telling true Texas tales and capturing the essence of blue-collar existence in this production. His band matches the meaningful lyrics with raucous, toe-tapping sounds and a few wistful tunes, which arrive just in time to cool you off with a slow dance. Whether you are driving down the road or scooting across hardwood at a party, this is one to have close to the CD player. The quality of Grammy winner Ray Benson's production studio is evident throughout this CD. Buy it, then go see them live. You won't regret either.

Cooder Graw - Shifting Gears 2001

Image

This refreshingly straight-ahead country album was a regional hit in the band's Texas home state on its original release, with its finely honed blend of hard-edged country songs like the title track and lovelorn bar ballads like "Better Days."

Formed in Amarillo, TX, in 1998, country rockers Cooder Graw are comprised of members Matt Martindale (vocals/acoustic guitar), Kelly Turner (guitar), Paul Baker (bass), Joe Ammons (drums), and Jim Whisenhut (pedal steel guitar). Jumping into the music biz later than usual (its members' age ranges from the late thirties through early fifties), Cooder Graw immediately earned a loyal, local fanbase, as they were named "Best New Band of the Year" by Dallas radio station KLIF, and won "Band of the Year" and "New Artist of the Year" by the Americana music website Rockzillaworld, which led to opening shows for such renowned country artists as Willie Nelson and Alabama. 2000 saw the band release their self-titled debut, produced by Ray Benson (a member of fellow country outfit Asleep at the Wheel) and Hayden Nicholas (a guitarist/songwriter who penned a total of nine chart topping hits for Clint Black). In January of 2001, Cooder Graw issued the 13 track live album, Segundo, which mixed previously unrecorded tunes with renditions of favorites from their debut, and by the end of the year, the band was already hard at work on their next studio effort.

Traсklist:
1. Shifting Gears
2. New Dress
3. King of the Dairy Queen
4. Better Days
5. God Only Knows
6. Any Old Girl

Cooder Graw - Wake Up 2004

Image

Cooder Graw has been making music together for about 7 years, and I dare say that "Wake Up" has to be their finest collaboration yet. From the expertly executed drum licks to the oh-so sweet guitar riffs, this band has got their finger on the pulse when it comes to the smooth blend of country and rock. The lead singer, Matt Martindale, croons some of the most thoughtful, intricately woven lyrics written from his own pen. To put it simply, pick up a copy of Cooder Graw's "Wake Up" today and you'll never nod off to country music again.
